Lyla Foy Plays Live on Echoes

Lyla Foy Brings her Haunting Songs to Echoes Live.

Lyla Foy on Echoes

Lyla Foy on Echoes

A lot of modern singers can’t bring it live.  They need backing tapes, ghost vocals, and rhythm tracks, if not more.  I remember one live Echoes session where the only sound in the studio was a lone voice, barely.  Everything else, vocal harmonies, bass, guitar, drums and key was coming off a computer even though a drummer, bassist and keyboardist were in the studio. The result was a performance that aspired to the perfection of a CD, but was ultimately lifeless; an imperfect artifact of a perfect moment.

Foy-MirrorBut I knew that English singer Lyla Foy could bring it live when I saw her crammed with two bandmates into the back of a London taxi for the renowned and quirky  “Black Cab Sessions.” She was recording as Wall then, but she lost nothing of the atmosphere or vulnerability of her music in this stripped down situation.

Lyla Foy's Feet on Echoes

Lyla Foy’s Feet on Echoes

When she came to Echoes to play music from her Mirrors the Sky album, it was still just a guitarist/bassist, drummer and Foy singing and playing lead.  No phantom voices or rhythm loops.  And the performance is powerful.   Standing barefoot with a black Fender Stratocaster slug around her neck,  Foy probed deep into her  songs of loss, longing and love.  There was a reason we picked her album as the  Echoes CD of the Month in April, and you can hear it tonight.

Read a review and hear tracks of Lyla Foy’s April CD of the Month, Mirrors the Sky.

S. Carey Live on Echoes

Bon Iver Drummer Creates Naturalist Dream Pop

S. Carey on Echoes

S. Carey on Echoes

Sean Carey has spent the last few years stroking drums and providing harmony vocals behind dream folk artist Bon Iver. So it’s not surprising that when he records as S.Carey, his own music has that same slow motion melancholy feel. But Carey brings some other elements to his new album, Range of Light that set him apart.

RangeHe writes songs about his family and merges them with imagery drawn from nature and the writings of environmentalist John Muir. We’ll hear him do that when he plays live on Echoes.

Tori Amos Live on Echoes

Tori Amos on Echoes

Tori Amos on Echoes

Tori Amos is an icon among singer-songwriters.  Her 1992 solo debut, Little Earthquakes still resonates more than 22 years later and now that she’s hit 50, Amos is showing no signs of mellowing in a music that is as politically and socially charged and as musically adventurous as ever.  Tomorrow, May 13, she’ll release Unrepentant Geraldines, an album that modulates concepts of aging, sexism, religion and love, although that might sometimes be hate.

Two weeks ago,  I sat down with Amos in the bowls of Manhattan, literally.  We were in Subculture, a new performance space in the basement of a 117 year old building.  The venue is settled in industrial art decor, with massive exposed support pillars with bolts the size of my calves and the rumble of New York’s subway seemingly a few inches under my feet.  Listen close and you can hear their growl.

Sitting at a Steinway grand piano, Tori played three songs for us including one she says she hasn’t performed live yet, “Wild Ways’ and talked extensively about her new music.

We also had a longer conversation and that will run on Echoes in forthcoming weeks so watch for that.  Meanwhile, enjoy our exclusive live performance with Tori Amos tonight on Echoes.

Mary Fahl in Echoes Podcast

May 2, 2014

Mary Fahl Talks of Love, Werewolves and Grace Slick in Echoes Podcast

Love-GravityMary Fahl doesn’t sound like any other modern singer. You have to go back to vocalists like Sandy Denny of Fairport Convention and Grace Slick of The Jefferson Airplane to find a reference point for a sound which is more like warrior angels than heavenly angels. She used to sing with October Project and that’s how many people know her, including author Anne Rice. She loved the band so much that she actually put them in her book, The Wolves of Midwinter, as source music.  Mary Fahl has just released her third solo album, Love and Gravity and it tackles themes you might expect from a woman who isn’t a teenager anymore.   It also includes a song written for the audio book of Anne Rice’s The Wolves of Midwinter.  Mary Fahl tells the story behind her werewolf song and about her musical influences from the 60s in Echoes Podcast.

Thus Owls Live on Echoes

THUS OWLS THEATER IN YOUR HEAD LIVE ON ECHOES

Thus Owls' Erika Angell live on Echoes

Thus Owls’ Erika Angell live on Echoes

I have been enchanted by Thus Owls.  This Canadian-Swedish band brings a theatrical feel to their songs of life on a Swedish island that is sometimes pastoral but often dark and haunted.  The band is fronted by singer Erika Angell who has a dramatic style that recalls Kate Bush, Tori Amos and a touch of Siouxsie Sioux’s arch darkness. Thus-Owls_Turning-Rocks_cover With husband Simon Angell on guitar, Thus Owls conjures dramatic musical structures that range from gentle autoharp refrains to screaming 60’s style rave-ups replete with Farfisa organ.  Their latest album is Turning Rocks.  You don’t want to disturb the neighbors with this one.  Wear headphones and turn it up when Thus Owls play live on Echoes.

James Hood Hangs Ten on a Hang Drum Live on Echoes

April 21, 2014

Moodswings Maestro Unplugs and Taps Metal Instead of Drums and Computer Keys Live

James Hood & Hang live on Echoes

James Hood & Hang live on Echoes

There are only a few new instruments in the 20th century and one of them is the Hang, often referred to as the Hang drum to the consternation of its creators, Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer of PanArts in Switzerland.  They call their instrument a sound sculpture.  With its flying saucer shape and strange indentations and bumps,  it looks like it might be an alien artifact discovered in an ancient temple excavation in India or Bali.   Recalling a steel drum, the Hang is an instrument that can’t sound bad.  Whatever you play is in tune.  CeremonyBut James Hood, who has played drums with The Pretenders and who helms the expansive electronica project, Moodswings,  finds a world of nuanced melody and rhythmic propulsion in this instrument.  He has a new double CD called Ceremony that is almost pure Hang drum, with multiple layers of the instrument spun through a few electronic effects.  Tonight Hood plays the instrument live in a deep Hang meditation on Echoes.

Mary Fahl Live on Echoes Tonight

March 24, 2014
Mary Fahl Live on Echoes

Mary Fahl Live on Echoes

One of the most distinctive voices in modern music has been singer Mary Fahl.  While we love the “ethereal girls” on Echoes, Mary Fahl is powerhouse singer whose roots are more Grace Slick and Sandy Denny than Elizabeth Fraser and Suzanne Vega.  SLove-Gravityhe came to renown fronting October Project back in the 90s. But when that group broke up, Fahl started writing her own music. And in case you thought she was another female singer-songwriter, she also recorded an explosive cover album of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon from front to back.  Now she has a new CD of original music, Love and Gravity that includes a song written for the audio book of Anne Rice’s The Wolves of Midwinter.  She’s actually a touchstone in the book when one of the characters remembers listening to October Project when he was younger.  With a full electric band, she comes into the Echoes Living Room and unleashes her vocal power live playing songs from Pink Floyd, October Project and her new CD, Love and Gravity.  Hear it tonight on Echoes.

Mree Plays Live on Echoes

March 11, 2014

Hear Mree perform in a Living Room Concert on Echoes tonight.

Mree goes where Enya fears to tread: creating music of stacked and layered vocals, and doing it live without backing tracks. Last year this then-19 year old musician released an album of sublime maturity called Winterwell. I’m still in love with this album.  Mree explores its haunting melodies live on Echoes.
