May Top 25 Echoes CDs

June 4, 2014

World Fusion, Dream Pop and Ambient Americana in Echoes Top 25 for May

Hidden Treasures-225The Echoes Top 25 for May continues a trend towards chilled out vocal music but the top three slots are held by three CD of the Month picks, one vocal, two instrumental.  Lyla Foy is a relatively new artist who used to record as Wall.  Her Mirrors the Sky album, the first under her own name, was a CD of the Month in March.  But surrounding her are two veteran Echoes artists, one of who goes back even further than the show.  Carl Weingarten’s beautiful chamber Americana journey, Life Under Stars is our current CD of the Month in June.   And leading the pack is Hans Christian’s Hidden Treasures, our May CD of the Month selection, an album of cross-cultural ecstasy.  You can read about all of those and hear tracks by following the links above.

Newcomers to the Echoes Top 25 include Stumbeleine, 9Bach, Phox, Hauschka, Ben Cosgrove and Michael Barry-Rec.  Here’s thecomplete list.

Marissa Nadler Live on Echoes

April 14, 2014
Janel Lepin & Marissa Nadler on Echoes

Janel Leppin & Marissa Nadler on Echoes

Marissa-Nadler-July-608x608Marissa Nadler is a singer-songwriter of delicate dimensions and deep atmospheres. Her latest album, July, is the story of one year in her life, from breakup to reunion. Today on Echoes she plays in the original Echoes Living Room, accompanied by cellist Janel Leppin of the duo Janel & Anthony. Nadler creates a dark and intimate music with her introspective lyrics framed by reverb drenched ambiences and her finger-style guitar picking.  She manage to be simultaneously simple and lush.  Hear it live tonight on Echoes.

Cosmic Cello and Downtempo Dreams

April 10, 2014

Hidden TreasuresHans Christian was one half of the group Rasa with singer Kim Waters, but before that he was a solo artist mixing his cello with electronics and other exotica.  He returns to solo form on a new CD called Hidden Treasures.  It’s an album of lush orchestrations featuring his cello, the Indian sarangi and sitara, Swedish nyckelharpa and more.  We’ll hear a track from that and new music by Thus Owls, a band with members from Montreal and Sweden creating a theatrical dream pop on their album Turning Rocks.  We’ll hear that as well as Davidge.  He was the producer of Massive Attack for many of their albums and he’s just released his solo debut, Slo Light with a bunch of guests singers including Emi Green on the track we’ll hear.  And speaking of Massive Attack, I’ve got them as well with Protection.  It’s all ahead today on Echoes.

Women of Echoes

March 6, 2014

A Celebration of Women in Music from the Echoes Spectrum for International Women’s Day

Laurie Anderson in Echoes Interview

Laurie Anderson in Echoes Interview

This Saturday, March 8 is International Women’s Day and as we do each year, we focus this show on the sounds of women musicians.  These days, that doesn’t seem as necessary as it did many years ago.  Even 20 years back, finding enough women musicians creating progressive, ambient and electronic music to fill this show wasn’t easy, but today, women are a big part of Echoes, if not in outright domination of the music you hear.  So this is more a show about celebrating how far we’ve come with women in music.  Today, we’ll hear women artists from pioneers like Laurie Anderson and Kate Bush  to a new generation like Norah Jones and London Grammar.

Frankie Rose Live on Echoes

Frankie Rose Live on Echoes

Laurie Anderson is the Grand Dame of new music. She defined the independent women composer and artist for the late 20th century with a personal vision that is unparalleled . She’s still creating great music and performance works today although she suffered a terrible loss this past year when her husband, Lou Reed, passed away.  You can hear Anderson’s influence on other contemporary composers like Julia Holter, a musician who probably wouldn’t have been possible without Laurie Anderson’s “O Superman.”

You can hear them all tonight on Women of EchoesPlaylist here.

Just say AH! with Linnea Olsson Live on Echoes

February 17, 2014

Swedish Cellist and Singer-Songwriter Linnea Olsson plays live on Echoes Tonight

Linnea Olsson

Linnea Olsson

A couple of weeks ago I recorded a double set of living room concerts in New York.  One was with singer-songwriter Ane Brun.  Look for that in forthcoming weeks. She was accompanied by fellow Swede, cellist Linnea Olsson.  When Brun’s set ended, she left, but Olsson stayed, plugged in her looping effects and performed a beautiful set of music from her bouyant, but gossamer fragile album, Ah!  Hear her do it live tonight on Echoes.

New music from Sting Guitarist

January 16, 2014
Coming up on Echoes we have new music from Dominic Miller.  He’s been the guitarist for Sting for many years, but on his own he cuts an eclectic instrumental sound.  He has a new CD called Ad Hoc .  We’ll also hear some dark gypsy cello by Adam Hurst and his album, “Nightfall”. It’s coming up today on Echoes.  This is my favorite track from Dominic Miller’s Ad Hoc.
