Tonight Sky remains one of my favorite and most curiously neglected albums of the last year.  Hear why you should love this music tonight on Echoes.

It’s a cliché, I know, but as soon as an Erik Wøllo album starts,
you know you are on a journey.  It’s like the moments before take-off, only Wøllo’s ascent doesn’t throw you back in your seat with G-Force thrust.  It’s a gentle rise into euphoric space. Timelines is a beautifully sculpted example of that.

Wøllo is a Norwegian musician who has been recording since 1984, releasing 18 solo albums in that span plus collaborations with musicians like Steve Roach, Ian Boddy and Kouame Sereba. From his 1988 album Traces (recently reissued on Spotted Peccary Records along with other Wøllo titles) Wøllo showed a command of detailed orchestrations and dramatic melodies. A guitarist and keyboardist, both elements come together in intricate and unexpected ways on Timelines.

Wøllo’s recent albums, Silent Currents and Airborne, have taken him into the drone zone inhabited by Steve Roach, but Timelines is a return to form for this guitarist who is more at home in a world of melody.  But you can hear those abstract influences in his electronic percussion palette which reflects the influence of his collaborations with Roach on Streams of Thought and Road Eternal.

The central core of this album is acoustic guitar, on which Wøllo composed all of the tracks, except I suspect, the spacey closer, “Ocean.”  On “Blue Rondo,” an acoustic guitar arpeggio seems to reveal itself out of an electronic swirl, merging with glurpy water drip electronic percussion, soaring synth pads and growling electric guitar drones before evolving into a gently percussive piece with some searing ebow guitar leads.

“Visions” is the centerpiece of the album, a slowly building work of interlocked percussion, electronic cycles and that ebow guitar that seems to emerge like a stealth bomber out of the storm clouds. Maybe that imagery is a little foreboding, but that’s what draws me to Wøllos music.  A track like “Along the Journey” could be a gentle walk through a Norwegian forest and easily devolve into New Age prettiness.  But throughout the walk, Wøllo has ambient atmospheres swirling at the edges, leaving them unfocused and mysterious.  There’s a darkness that balances the light, a dark undertow that serves to put his melodies in beautiful bas relief.  And then of course, there’s the thudding percussion and spiraling ebow solo that reveals this is no country walk.

Erik Wøllo has had a few CD of the Month picks in the past.  It’s hard not to.  Time is suspended when you cross Erik Wøllo’s Timelines.

From Beach Boys to Tangerine Dream: Ulrich Schnauss & Mark Peters in Echoes Podcast

It’s been an Ulrich Schnauss year here at Echoes.  He had a CD of the Month in February this year with A Long Way to Fall and we interviewed him as well.  Then he played live for us in early September and now he’s back again.  It turned out that when he came in to play live he also had a forthcoming album with guitarist Mark Peters from Engineers, and it just so happened that Peters was tagging along with Schnauss on tour.  So I sat them down to talk about their music for an alternate reality.

Ulrich Schnauss is one of the icons of downtempo electronica with albums like A Strangely Isolated Place and A Long Way to Fall.  Mark Peters is a bit less well known in this country.  He has a band called Engineers in England who play a dreamy brand of shoegaze music.  He and Ulrich Schnauss hit it off so well that Schnauss actually joined Engineers.  But the two musicians have also released a pair of duet albums for guitar and electronics.  Their latest is Tomorrow is Another Day.

Mark Peters on The Beach Boys: It hit me really hard when I was kind of first learning to play guitar at 15.  And then I’d just become a super nut about it and every last bootleg, every little clip on YouTube, everything is just…and I think it’s just, you know, kind of a classical type complexity that’s just so interesting.
John Diliberto: You’re hardcore, aren’t you?
Mark Peters: Big time.  Bit of a geek.  Yeah, Ulrich’s got his head in his hands.

Ulrich Schnauss on altered states: That’s the point at the end of the day, like you’re trying to create something that doesn’t reflect the reality that surrounds you, but something that actually creates the opposite, a counterpoint to reality, an alternative or a utopia.

Top 25 CDs for December

 DARSHAN AMBIENT’S DREAM IN BLUE

Leads December Top 25 CDs on Echoes.

It was our December CD of the Month so it’s no surprise that Darshan Ambient’s Dream in Blue topped our Echoes Top 25 for the month.  You can read a review and hear tracks here.

The first four releases on the list all come from electronic realms, be it Krusseldorf‘s melodic downtempo electronica on From Soil To Space, Jon Durant’s electronically processed guitars and violin on Dance of the Shadow Planets, or Northcape’s ambient Captured from Static.  But that’s followed up by a couple of acoustic guitarists, Sergio Altamura and Keith Medley.  There are lot’s of former CD of the Month selections on this list including Jeff Oster’s Surrender,  Akara’s Extradimesional Ethnography and Patrick O’Hearn’s Transitions.   Look for January’s CD of the Month club selection with Tino Izzo’s Morning Scapes, in at #12.  You can see the complete Top 25 here.
