Stars Shine in Tonight Sky on Echoes Tonight

Jason Holstrom in the Cabana

Jason Holstrom in the Cabana

Tonight Sky remains one of my favorite and most curiously neglected albums of the last year.  Hear why you should love this music tonight on Echoes.

Jason Holstrom has been on the Seattle music since the turn of the millennium playing in groups like Wonderful and United States of Electronica. TonightSkyBut none of that music would prepare you for the serenely feel good vibrations of his project,Tonight Sky.  He’s taken Beach Boys harmonies and sent them into electronica space.  In Seattle, I surf the music of Tonight Sky with Jason Holstrom tonight on Echoes.

Tell me that this song doesn’t just make you feel good.

Juliette Commagere Talks about Being Human

Hear Singer-Songwriter Juliette Commagere Talking About her Dream Pop on Echoes

Juliette Commagere on Echoes

Juliette Commagere on Echoes

I’ve been enchanted by the voice of Juliette Commagere since I heard her singing on a Ry Cooder record, Chavez Ravine. Then came  “Gold,” the track she sang on Love on A Real Train’s debut last year was one of our favorite cuts.  Juliette recently released her third solo album, Human.  It’s a beautiful and introspective electronic song cycle.  Today, Juliette Commagere talks about her musical family and songs on the dark side.

Lyla Foy Plays Live on Echoes

May 19, 2014

Lyla Foy Brings her Haunting Songs to Echoes Live.

Lyla Foy on Echoes

Lyla Foy on Echoes

A lot of modern singers can’t bring it live.  They need backing tapes, ghost vocals, and rhythm tracks, if not more.  I remember one live Echoes session where the only sound in the studio was a lone voice, barely.  Everything else, vocal harmonies, bass, guitar, drums and key was coming off a computer even though a drummer, bassist and keyboardist were in the studio. The result was a performance that aspired to the perfection of a CD, but was ultimately lifeless; an imperfect artifact of a perfect moment.

Foy-MirrorBut I knew that English singer Lyla Foy could bring it live when I saw her crammed with two bandmates into the back of a London taxi for the renowned and quirky  “Black Cab Sessions.” She was recording as Wall then, but she lost nothing of the atmosphere or vulnerability of her music in this stripped down situation.

Lyla Foy's Feet on Echoes

Lyla Foy’s Feet on Echoes

When she came to Echoes to play music from her Mirrors the Sky album, it was still just a guitarist/bassist, drummer and Foy singing and playing lead.  No phantom voices or rhythm loops.  And the performance is powerful.   Standing barefoot with a black Fender Stratocaster slug around her neck,  Foy probed deep into her  songs of loss, longing and love.  There was a reason we picked her album as the  Echoes CD of the Month in April, and you can hear it tonight.

Read a review and hear tracks of Lyla Foy’s April CD of the Month, Mirrors the Sky.

Welsh Dream Pop on Echoes

May 15, 2014

The Welsh Band 9Bach has a new CD on Realworld Records.

TincianIt’s been a while since we’ve featured a Welsh band on Echoes. The last one I recall was Ceredwen, a beautifully produced project that released two albums in the late 1990s on the Real Music label. Ceredwen featured the compositions of Andrew Fryer with Renee Gray singing in Welsh. There’s been a few individual artists from Wales along the way, guitarist Gareth Pearson and synthesist Robert Fox among them, and I’m sure there are more but 9Bach is the first in a while. Although 9Bach’s Lisa Jen sings entirely in Welsh, this isn’t traditional music. It just uses traditional forms and modalities as a staging ground for broader compositional concerns. You can hear them on their second CD, Tincian which means a resonant sound. The name 9Bach, by the way, is pronounced the way it looks although it’s meaning is something vaguely like “little grandmother.” We’ll hear 9Bach and more tonight on Echoes.

Echoes Goes to the Darkside

May 14, 2014

Hear an Interview with Darkside Tonight on Echoes.

Darkside @ Mountain Oasis. Photo: Diliberto

This past October I got to see the band Darkside at the Mountain Oasis Electronic Music Summit.  They played before an impressively large audience in the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium, considering they only had one album out, Psychic.  They’re a band that favors shadows, standing in twin cones of low, smoke filled light, delivering snarling guitar leads over throbbing electronic drums and sequences like a pong game on acid. They recalled the German band Can, with their motoric grooves and free improvisation, but brought a modern DJ sensibility to their set.  It was like a rave in a bomb shelter.  Tonight on Echoes we’ll revisit our interview with Darkside’s Nicolas Jaar and Dave Harrington.

Guitarist Dave Harrington has just released a solo EP,  Before This There Was One Heart But a Thousand Thoughts .

Check out their live set in Paris last year.  And turn it up.

Hans Christian’s Hidden Treasures

May 5, 2014

Cellist Hans Christian creates Global Serenity with Hidden Treasures
The Echoes May CD of the Month

Hidden Treasures-225Hans Christian launches his new CD playing cello. It’s the instrument he began with studying classical repertoire and he’s done recordings with it from the purely Renaissance album, Light and Spirit, to pure solo improvisations on Sancta Camisia, and of course, looping cello on Undefended Heart. But it’s when Christian taps into his global voice that he really sings. His isn’t the classical cello of Yo-Yo Ma. With Christian, notes bend in searing arcs, fraying at the edges with resonant sound.

Together We Were

Hans Christian is less a classical musician and more a global musician. It’s something he began on his solo albums, Surrender and Phantoms in the early 1990s and perfected with Rasa, the chanting duo he had throughout the first decade of the 21st century with singer Kim Waters. Christian created lush instrumental fusions behind Waters’ serene voice, alchemy of cello with the sarangi, an Indian bowed instrument, the sitara, a mini-sitar, eastern percussion and lots of electronics.

Hans Christian playing sarangi on Echoes with Rasa.

Hans Christian playing sarangi on Echoes with Rasa.

That’s the touchstone for Christian’s new solo album, Hidden Treasures, although when I say solo, it’s more in the “solo” tradition of Mike Oldfield’s one-man orchestra than a cello recital. Christian’s orchestrations are heavenly ascensions of throbbing rhythms from a mix of percussion loops and insistent bass lines from both electronic sources and bass guitar. He loves to set up dialogs between the instruments, with sarangi and sitara answering each other on “Light Headed” and swooping cello sitting in opposition to nattering sitara on “Tashina’s Fire,” a song written for an ill friend.

Tashina’s Fire

Each track is a different landscape. On “Incessant Heart” a Tibetan chant seems to emerge out of electronica swamp music and he does it without one vocal chant or sample in sight, instead evoking that feeling with deep bass drones. Christian’s cello is given full voice on “Cathedral of Tears,” on which he solos in elegiac sadness over a bed of synthesizer pads and nature effects.

Cathedrals of Tears

With Hidden Treasures, Hans Christian creates yet another enveloping space, a new world that goes beyond the exotic, that takes you from the heart of darkness to the heart of serenity in a 21st century global symphony.

NOTE: Hans Christian’s album with Harry Manx, You Are the Music of My Silence was also a CD of the Month Pick

Echoes Top 25 for April

April 29, 2014

Dream-pop Dominates Echoes Top Ten in April

Foy-MirrorThe year is 25% done and here’s some of the music that’s been bubbling to the top of the Echoes playlists during April.  Of course, Lyla Foy’s April CD of the MonthMirrors the Sky is number one and deservedly so.  Look for live performances and interviews with Foy in the next month or so.  She’s followed by six more singers, beginning with Thus Owls, who I happen to be listening to on-air right now doing a phenomenal live Echoes set.

It’s great to see Hiroki Okano return to Echoes with his new .jp album.  He was a fixture on the show in the mid-90s.  And Steve Roach returns to the Echoes Top Ten with Spiral Meditations.

Cosmic Cello and Downtempo Dreams

April 10, 2014

Hidden TreasuresHans Christian was one half of the group Rasa with singer Kim Waters, but before that he was a solo artist mixing his cello with electronics and other exotica.  He returns to solo form on a new CD called Hidden Treasures.  It’s an album of lush orchestrations featuring his cello, the Indian sarangi and sitara, Swedish nyckelharpa and more.  We’ll hear a track from that and new music by Thus Owls, a band with members from Montreal and Sweden creating a theatrical dream pop on their album Turning Rocks.  We’ll hear that as well as Davidge.  He was the producer of Massive Attack for many of their albums and he’s just released his solo debut, Slo Light with a bunch of guests singers including Emi Green on the track we’ll hear.  And speaking of Massive Attack, I’ve got them as well with Protection.  It’s all ahead today on Echoes.

Music Reimagined-The Echoes Covers Show

April 9, 2014

Echoes Plays All Cover Tunes Tonight from Prog Rock to Pop Shlock
You’ll Never Hear Grease and Gloria Gaynor the Same Way Again

Icebreaker-ApolloEveryone is doing cover tunes these days and the best ones reinvent the songs the way Jimi Hendrix did with Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower.”  So today, you’ll hear music you probably know, but not by the artists you remember performing it.  Some of them may surprise you, especially on Echoes.  We’ll hear a massive hit from the disco era, a song written by Sonny Bono that was a big hit for Cher in 1966 (and since covered by everyone from The Bonzo Dog Band and Vanilla Fudge to David Guetta and Murder by Death), and music from Grease.  Don’t worry, you won’t be hearing John Travolta or Olivia Newton-John anytime soon on Echoes.  We’ll also hear songs from the Progressive Rock era by Pink Floyd, Mike Oldfield and Brian Eno.  And can you do a covers show without playing a Beatles tune?  We’ll hear two of them.  Many of the songs are performed by Echoes regulars like the California Guitar Trio, Japancakes, Pat Metheny, and William Orbit. Go undercover tonight on Echoes.

And here’s the cover against which all covers are judged:

Circadian Rhythms-Ambient Songs

April 3, 2014

Today on Echoes new music from S. Carey & Erothyme

coverComing up on Echoes, we’ll hear music from S. Carey’s Range of Light.  Carey is the drummer and backing singer for Bon Iver and while he shares Justin Vernon’s vocal timbre he has his own atmospheric approach to the singer-songwriter paradigm.  We’ll also fall into the lush electronic expanses of Erothyme.  That’s the awkwardly named recording moniker of Bobbie West from Seattle who has about 8 releases out. I found him via a Facebook update from Bluetech who recommended Erothyme’s latest album, Circadia.  Bluetech was right.   You can download this album free on Bandcamp but be good and give him some money for his excellent work.  You can hear that and much more tonight on Echoes.
