Eklipse’s live performance on Echoes has been one of our most popular shows of 2013.  If you like your string quartets wearing dominatrix attire, glam make-up and playing songs from pop and alt-rock bands, then I’ve got one for you.  Their name is Eklipse, and they are a quartet of young German women flaunting their sexuality and their love of modern pop music. They’ve gained a following in heavy metal circles, but their sound is more classical than metal as they turn alt-rock songs from people like Justin Timberlake, Nick Cave and Massive Attack into classical etudes on their album, Electric Air.  You can’t see them on the radio, but you can hear them live tonight on Echoes.

In alternative rock circles, German bands from the 1980s are considered pioneers of sound.  Kraftwerk, Can, Neu, Harmonia and Cluster are consistently name-checked by everyone from David Bowie and Brian Eno to Stereolab and Radiohead. Hans-Joachim Roedelius, a founding member of Cluster and Harmonia, will be 80 in 2014, but he is still as prolific as ever.  He recently teamed up in an unlikely alliance with 80’s rock musician Lloyd Cole, best know for Lloyd Cole and the Commotions.  Their album together is Selected Studies Volume 1.  I talk to Lloyd Cole and Hans-Joachim Roedelius about their cross-generational collaboration tonight on Echoes.

Hauschka’s Mystery Prepared Piano

Here’s a bit of fantasy and prepared piano from Haushka, the German pianist who was recently on Echoes with violinist Hilary Hahn.  This is from the press release:

While on a recent US tour with Grammy-winning American violinist Hilary Hahn, celebrated Düsseldorf-born piano composer Hauschka took a time-out to create this very special 3-part performance series with esteemed director Greg Hunt, set designer Tamarra Younis, and sound engineer J. Clark. Employing elements of magical realism, prepared piano, playful improvisation and inspired collaboration, this episode embodies everything we’ve come to love about Room 205.
