James Hood & Hang live on Echoes

There are only a few new instruments in the 20th century and one of them is the Hang, often referred to as the Hang drum to the consternation of its creators, Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer of PanArts in Switzerland.  They call their instrument a sound sculpture.  With its flying saucer shape and strange indentations and bumps,  it looks like it might be an alien artifact discovered in an ancient temple excavation in India or Bali.   Recalling a steel drum, the Hang is an instrument that can’t sound bad.  Whatever you play is in tune.  CeremonyBut James Hood, who has played drums with The Pretenders and who helms the expansive electronica project, Moodswings,  finds a world of nuanced melody and rhythmic propulsion in this instrument.  He has a new double CD called Ceremony that is almost pure Hang drum, with multiple layers of the instrument spun through a few electronic effects.  Tonight Hood plays the instrument live in a deep Hang meditation on Echoes.

James Hood’s Hang Meditation in Echoes Podcast

March 1, 2014

Hear Moodswings Maven James Hood in Echoes Podcast.

CeremonyOne of my favorite albums of the 21st century remains the CD Horizontal by Moodswings.  It was a perfect CD of ambient expanses, melodically tuned and atmospherically vast.  The man behind that album was James Hood.  After a lifetime in music, including playing drums with The Pretenders, he disappeared.  Twelve years later, he’s back with a new double CD called Ceremony and a new instrument called the Hang.  The Hang is a metal percussion instrument that looks like a flying saucer with dents. Invented in 2000 by Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer, the creators call it a sound sculpture. Don’t you dare call it a drum. They have stopped producing them, making the instrument rare.  James Hood has three of them. James Hood Playing Hang on Echoes It’s a seductive instrument in form and sound, with a space age design and sonorous tones.  Jame Hood has become addicted to the Hang and he’s unplugged to make an “almost” pure hang drum recording on Ceremony .  I wrote the liner notes for the album, which has just been released.  Hear James Hood talk about his Hang epiphany in the Echoes Podcast.

Hanging with Portico Quartet

August 6, 2010

I just finished an interview with Portico Quartet, the London band that’s part of a new generation of jazz ensembles that includes  Nik Bartsch’s Ronin, Tord Gustavsen, Brad Mehldau, The Bad Plus and the late E.S.T.   Portico is a fully collective trio, but the instrument getting a lot of attention is the Hang drum,  made in Switzerland.  Echoes listeners have been hearing this for years from Will Clipman, Jeff Ball’s group and many others.  With the Hang drum creating a modal center, Portico Quartet are slipping some very outside and edgy free jazz improvisation into a very seductive package.  Their second album, Isla, gets released here the end of the month on Realworld Records. Here’s a clip of Portico Quartet live in the studio.  The Hang is seen right at the start.

The Portico Quartet interview will run on Echoes in  early September, right before their first US tour.
