Tiny Time Pills & a Poke in the Ribs

March 27, 2014

Today on Echoes it’s new music from Elbow & The Capsules

TakeOffElbow is the English band that takes 80s new wave stylings and a bit of Peter Gabriel narrative drama and updates them into their own, often moody sound.  Their new album is The Take Off and Landing of Everything.

LongGoodbyeThe Capsules are a dreampop band but with a harder edge, from Lawrence, Kansas.  Their new album is The Long Goodbye and the song, “Super Symmetry” is one of those tunes I can get out of my head with it’s minimal sequencer, sawtooth grind and Julie Shields‘ chilled, ice queen delivery.

Here’s the rest of today’s show

Tycho & Davidge

March 26, 2014

New Music from Tycho & Davidge tonight on Echoes

AwakeIt was great to hear Scott Hansen, who is effectively Tycho, on NPR’s Weekend Sunday Edition.   Of course, we had him on Echoes for a great live performance and an interview back in 2012.  You can hear a track from his set on our CD Transmissions: The Echoes Living Room Concerts Volume 19.  His new album, Awake, continues the propulsive electronic sound driven by electric piano and topped by his guitar which often echoes surf guitar modalities.

Slo LightDavidge is Neil Davidge who has worked extensively with Massive Attack and was also a member of DNA.  He has just released his solo debut, Slo Light, an album of electronica songs with different singers, among them, an Echoes favorite, Low Roar.  But we’ll hear a track with Sandie Shaw a singer who was massively popular in England and throughout Europe in the 1960s.  Below is another track we’re also playing.

And here’s a blast from the past, Sandie Shaw, some 40 years ago I think.

Mree Plays Live on Echoes

March 11, 2014

Hear Mree perform in a Living Room Concert on Echoes tonight.

Mree goes where Enya fears to tread: creating music of stacked and layered vocals, and doing it live without backing tracks. Last year this then-19 year old musician released an album of sublime maturity called Winterwell. I’m still in love with this album.  Mree explores its haunting melodies live on Echoes.

Just say AH! with Linnea Olsson Live on Echoes

February 17, 2014

Swedish Cellist and Singer-Songwriter Linnea Olsson plays live on Echoes Tonight

Linnea Olsson

A couple of weeks ago I recorded a double set of living room concerts in New York.  One was with singer-songwriter Ane Brun.  Look for that in forthcoming weeks. She was accompanied by fellow Swede, cellist Linnea Olsson.  When Brun’s set ended, she left, but Olsson stayed, plugged in her looping effects and performed a beautiful set of music from her bouyant, but gossamer fragile album, Ah!  Hear her do it live tonight on Echoes.

Tangerine Dream Live at Moogfest

January 20, 2012

Is It Safe To Listen To Tangerine Dream Again?

Tangerine Dream's Founder Edgar Froese

This might come a bit late but I’ve come across very  little coverage about it since Moogfest 2011 at the end of October.  Tangerine Dream headlined the festival and did a 2 hour show.  Like many fans, I’ve become a bit inurred to the band.  You can understand why with albums like Under Cover – Chapter One, on which they do covers of pop hits that are often faithful (The Eagles‘ “Hotel California”) and sometimes excruciating reinventions (Kraftwerk’s “The Model”).  Either way: This is Tangerine Dream?

But I just found out that they are in the processing of booking a US tour and that made me look online again.  And I discovered this great performance from Moogfest.  NPR put up their entire 2 hour show, and while it’s not classic-era 70’s TD, it is an extension of that sound with a full band.   The sound, probably a board feed, isn’t spectacular, but the performance is actually worth sitting through.  I can’t remember the last time I said that about Tangerine Dream, and I really want too.

Here’s the link: http://www.npr.org/event/music/141658754/tangerine-dream-in-concert-moogfest-2011

Or you can get this set from TD’s site.

Here’s the reported US dates so far:

THE ELECTRIC MANDARINE TOUR IN USA 2012

July 6th – Philadelphia, PA / Verizon Hall

July 7th – Washington DC / Warner Theatre

July 14th – Detroit, MI / Fillmore Theatre

July 18th – Chicago, IL / Vic Theatre

July 20th – Milwaukee, WI / Pabst Theatre

July 21st – Minneapolis, MN / Orpheum Theatre

July 25th – Madison, WI – Orpheum Theatre (State Street)

Popol Vuh Video

January 5, 2009

Das Hohelied Salomos Having just played a track from Popol Vuh’s Das Hohelied Salomos on WXPN’s Highs in the 70s: Progressive Rock show, I was thrilled to discover a new Popol Vuh video up on YouTube.  It’s a track of the “classic” PV line-up with singer Djong Yun, guitarist Daniel Filschesher, oboe player, Robert Eliscu and PV founder and pianist, the late-Florian Fricke.  It’s footage from WDR, West Germany TV of a live take on “Kyrie from the Hosianna Mantra album.  I posted another video up in an earlier blog.

By the way, thanks to all the folks who called in to WXPN Saturday during the show, leaving great requests and fond memories from the days of Diaspar.
