Badass Music and Rush Tonight on Echoes

May 1, 2014

New Music from Bear McCreary & The Montreal Guitar Trio

Knights_of_BadassdomTonight on Echoes, new music from a film nobody saw, but you’ll definitely recognize the composer. It’s Bear McCreary who scored Battlestar Galactica and The Walking Dead as well as many films. We’ll hear his soundtrack to The Nights of Badassdom.  This movie was released on January 13 but looks like it went straight to video, or the internet, or wherever films go that only gross $86K.  However, it stars Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Steve Zahn (Treme, That Thing You Do!) and Ryan Kwanten (True Blood) and the trailer looks pretty funny.   http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00CYP9GKE/echoes

We’ll also hear MG3, which is much cooler than saying the Montreal Guitar Trio.  Their new CD is Der Prinz and they take Rush‘s epic “Tom Sawyer” and turn it into an acoustic guitar epic.  You’ll hear it tonight on Echoes.

Signal Paths – A Cross-generational Electronic Journey

NEA LogoExton, PA— National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Acting Chairman Joan Shigekawa announced today that Pennsylvania Public Radio Associates, Inc/ECHOES is one of 886 nonprofit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant. ECHOES is recommended for a $30,000 grant to support daily production of the Echoes radio show distributed by Public Radio International and heard on over 120 public radio stations nationwide and a new initiative Signal Paths: A Cross-generational Electronic Journey.

130528_EchoesEntering its 25th year, Echoes has been serving up soundscapes of ambient, electronic, new acoustic, world fusion, dream-pop and chamber jazz, while taking listeners around the world for exclusive in depth interviews and live performances. With Signal Paths: A Cross-generational Electronic Journey, we will draw upon our vast archives of interviews with early electronic pioneers, mixing them with interviews with contemporary artists, creating a virtual dialogue exploring the lineage of electronic sound. Imagine a conversation between German pioneer Karlheinz Stockhausen and EDM Giant, Skrillex; Switched-On Bach’s Wendy Carlos and Ambient Music creator, Brian Eno; experimental composer John Cage and Moby.

NEA Acting Chairman Shigekawa said, “The NEA is pleased to announce that Echoes is recommended for an NEA Art Works grant. These NEA-supported projects will not only have a positive impact on local economies, but will also provide opportunities for people of all ages to participate in the arts, help our communities to become more vibrant, and support our nation’s artists as they contribute to our cultural landscape.”

“NEA has supported Pennsylvania Public Radio/Echoes from the very beginning, including our previous series Totally Wired”  said Echoes Executive Director John Diliberto. “In a way, we’ve come full circle since we’ll be drawing upon many of those earlier interviews for Signal Paths. The goal of Echoes has always been to bring new and innovative music to American audiences and to put that music in a broader context. Signal Paths will expand on those aspirations.”

LRC19-250pxArt Works grants support the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, public engagement with diverse and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts, and enhancement of the livability of communities through the arts. The NEA received 1,515 eligible applications under the Art Workscategory, requesting more than $76 million in funding. Of those applications, 886 are recommended for grants for a total of $25.8 million.

Tiny Time Pills & a Poke in the Ribs

March 27, 2014

Today on Echoes it’s new music from Elbow & The Capsules

TakeOffElbow is the English band that takes 80s new wave stylings and a bit of Peter Gabriel narrative drama and updates them into their own, often moody sound.  Their new album is The Take Off and Landing of Everything.

LongGoodbyeThe Capsules are a dreampop band but with a harder edge, from Lawrence, Kansas.  Their new album is The Long Goodbye and the song, “Super Symmetry” is one of those tunes I can get out of my head with it’s minimal sequencer, sawtooth grind and Julie Shields‘ chilled, ice queen delivery.

Here’s the rest of today’s show

Mree Plays Live on Echoes

March 11, 2014

Hear Mree perform in a Living Room Concert on Echoes tonight.

Mree goes where Enya fears to tread: creating music of stacked and layered vocals, and doing it live without backing tracks. Last year this then-19 year old musician released an album of sublime maturity called Winterwell. I’m still in love with this album.  Mree explores its haunting melodies live on Echoes.

Windham Hill Records hasn’t been around for many years, but their influence remains strong.  Today, we’ll hear from another guitar player whose music was shaped by the recordings of Will Ackerman and Alex De GrassiShambhu is one of those musicians. In fact, Windham Hill founder Will Ackerman produced his album, Dreaming of Now.  His actual name is Neil Vineberg but he uses Shambhu as his stage name, which was given to him by spiritual Dreaming of Nowleader Sri Chinmoy.  He comes into the Echoes Living Room with famed cellist Eugene Friesen from the Paul Winter Consort and windplayer Premik Tubbs.  They’ll play live tonight on Echoes.

The Echoes Discovery of 2013: Mree

December 30, 2013

Hear Mree interviewed on Echoes tonight.

WInterwellTechnically, Mree isn’t a new artist.  She released her debut album, Glow,  in 2011 when she was all of 17 years old.  But it’s her sophomore release, Winterwell, that revealed an artist of intoxicating depth and studio virtuosity.    Mree is not your typical singer song-writer.  Even though she started out playing acoustic guitar in her bedroom and recording alt-rock songs in her bathroom on YouTube,  she’s evolved her sound into something closer to dream pop than folk, embracing influences from the New Age, Alt-Rock and ambient into a music that is both intimate and atmospheric.  As a child Mree listened to Mariah Carey, but now the 20 year old musician is more likely to cite, Sigur Ros, Hammock and Bon Iver as influences.  She talks about Winterwell, listening to Enya and looping her voice tonight on Echoes.

Aisling Jarvis, Moya Brennan, Cormac De Barra in Echoes Living Room

Aisling Jarvis, Moya Brennan, Cormac De Barra in Echoes Living Room

I don’t know how Celtic music came to signify winter, but  slow aires and Celtic harps seem to exemplify a quieter and more atmospheric side of the Winter season.  We’ve dipped into that sound on Sonic Seasonings several times over the years and we’re doing it again.

Last week we recorded our seasonal live performance show, recording two concerts in 24 hours on opposite coasts.  You can hear them tonight on an Echoes Celtic Sonic Seasonings.

IrishChristmasThis year we have two artists returning.  On Monday afternoon, December 9, with fresh fallen snow on the ground, Moya Brennan came to the Echoes living room with her long time partner, harpist Cormac De Barra and her daughter Aisling Jarvis.  In a testament to time, I first interviewed Moya backstage at the TLA Theater in Philadelphia in 1993 when she was pregnant with Aisling.  And at the time, Moya spelled her name Máire Ní Bhraonáin.

Moya is acclaimed as the singer of Clannad, the Irish band that was part of the Celtic renaissance that began in the 1970s.  That band reformed this year for the album, Nadur, but Moya has been solo for the last 15 years.  This past year she released the album, Affinity with Cormac De Barra under the banner of Voices & Harps.  She also re-released her album, An Irish Christmas with bonus tracks.  We’ll hear this trio in a weave of harp strings and heart-rending harmonies when they play live on An Echoes Celtic Sonic Seasonings.

Jeff Johnson, Wendy Goodwin, Brian Dunning recording Echoes Celtic Sonic Seasonings

Jeff Johnson, Wendy Goodwin, Brian Dunning recording Echoes Celtic Sonic Seasonings

Immediately following Moya’s show in our southeastern Pennsylvania living room, Jeff Towne and I hopped on a flight to Seattle and the next day, December 10, we were in the home studio of keyboardist Jeff Johnson where he’d gathered his Celtic trio of flutist Brian Dunning and violinist Wendy Goodwin.
Jeff Johnson is a veteran of Celtic cross-over and devotional albums with dozens of CDs out on his own Ark Music label as well as Windham Hill and Hearts of Space Records.  Brian Dunning has been with him on many of those

Goodwin, Johnson, Dunning, Diliberto

Goodwin, Johnson, Dunning, Diliberto

recordings.  He has a connection to the early Celtic renaisance as a member of the band Nightnoise which included guitarist Mícheál Ó Domhnaill and his sister, singer and keyboardist Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill.  Mícheál, who died in 2006 had been a member of the legendary and influential Bothy Band.  They are joined by Portland-based violinist Wendy Goodwin who released her solo debut, Place of Refuge last year. Collectively, the trio released a gorgeous CD, of pastoral, ambient winter chamber works called Winterfold this past fall and it’s in the Echoes Top 25 for 2013
WinterfoldThe trio crammed into Johnson’s studio and played beautiful arrangements of music from this album and drew from tracks that have appeared on Johnson & Dunning’s A Quiet Knowing and Under the Wonder Sky albums and a few Windham Hill collections.

So sit back and enjoy the best Christmas music you’ll hear this year; a sound that will take you out of the shopping malls and into your heart on An Echoes Celtic Sonic Seasonings streaming now for free.

And for an all-instrumental Christmas with no spoken interruptions, dial up Christmas Echoes at Echoes On-Line.  Six hours of uninterrupted non-shopping mall seasonal bliss.

He turns them into introspective dreampop with a host of guest singers.  He comes to Echoes with two other wonderful vocalists, Charlotte Savary and Nathalie Réaux.  They give an enchanting performance of music from the most underrated album of 2013, including a new cover.

12 Echoes CDs of the Month Tonight

December 4, 2013

WE LOOK BACK AT ECHOES CD OF THE MONTH PICKS FROM 2013

November: Moby - Innocents

November: Moby – Innocents

Every month on Echoes we pick out the CD of the Month. It’s the album we think best represents the sound of Echoes and simply, the best album in that sound.  This year has been a great one for CD of the Month  selections, so I thought we’d do an entire show looking back at those albums. We’ll be going from our current December pick, David Helpling & Jon Jenkins’ Found, all the way back to our January pick, The Ambient Zone-Just Music Café Volume 4.

January: The Ambient Zone - Just Music Cafe Volume 4

January: The Ambient Zone – Just Music Cafe Volume 4

They aren’t necessarily the best albums of the year, but they were all the best album of their respective months and I would be surprised if they all weren’t in our year end top 25.  It can be hard picking the albums. The selections are either slim or abundant.  This year fell on the abundant side as we had our best stretch of Echoes CD of the Month picks in a while.  As we head toward the end of the year and best of lists, I thought I’d look back at our twelve picks.  Maybe these are albums you voted for in the Best of Echoes 2013 poll going on right now at echoes.org.

Prepare for the show with reviews and tracks from all the CDs
